George Foca Rodi

On Saturday night, Romanian pianist George Foca-Rodi returned to Tully for an all-Chopin recital, and once again he offered the kind of unique musical invention that otherwise has virtually vanished from our concert halls. Choosing mainly subjective examples of the composer's Polonaises, Mazurkas, Ballades and Nocturnes (accented by an almost completely darkened stage), Foca-Rodi gave the music interpretations of complete freedom (abetted by a touch of uncanny lightness and fluidity), yet in no way did he go over the edge of common musical sense. No one in recent years has made Chopin sound more consistently interesting, and no one has ever played him better.
